Big Dreams

As a young man I was told-

If you do not know where you want to go then where ever you end up has to be OK

I dreamed of sailing around the world, so a drifting lifestyle did have some appeal!

Most business owners plan to use their business as the primary vehicle to realise their BIG DREAM. So as a business owner how are you progressing?

Here are some thought starters-

Have a dream that excites you and is powerful enough to keep drawing you towards it. When I first engage with a new client the very first meeting to to establish a personal vision. To document what excites them and give them purpose for all that extra hard work we are going to be doing in the period ahead. When times get tough and we hit the “frustration bubble” we come back to the vision and if its powerful enough it will sustain them.

Think strategically about how you are going to achieve, typically we use our career, investments or business to provide the vehicle to fuel our dream. Over the years I have purposely and progressively moved closer to my big dream, each career move, each investment decision had my big dream in mind. But this is where many get trapped, the job or business becomes all consuming it’s not paying the bills and you forget about your dreams as the priorities of day to day life take over. It takes real focus to lift your head up and keep going, your big dream must be front of mind, talk about it often, share it with others so they can encourage you to keep going.

Do something! Make a plan, set yourself priorities and deadlines, act everyday to move yourself closer. If it’s your business that’s going to provide you the funds and the freedom to achieve your dream make sure you are working On” and not just “In”. This is where a good business partner can help someone to bounce ideas off, give you structure and keep you accountable. I know from first hand experience that when these relationships work there is definitely a 1+1=3 outcome.

Die with no regrets, I had two quite different experience with clients in the past few weeks while I was on vacation I received a call from the brother of a client, my client had been taken ill and was incapable of running his business for the foreseeable future. We must now make a plan that will sustain his business without him in it, isn’t that what most business owners want? Why wait until you are forced to act?
The second client relayed to me how he had taken time out in Rarotonga, organised the land he wanted and had started on plans to build his dream lifestyle business and home, all made possible by the work we had done on his business the previous year- now that’s a real buzz!
