SME’s on fire!

Do you see yourself blazing a trail in your business, a focused and determined path to a brighter future?

The success of TV shows such as Dragons Den, Hotel Rescue, the Profit and now New Zealand’s own Supersize SME demonstrates clearly that if business’s get a little (or a lot) of assistance from outside that great changes and progress can be made. Businesses may even be rescued from certain demise!

We have a saying in our business that “1+1=3” If two people with different experience and skills look at a problem or opportunity the outcome will be demonstrably better than if one person alone approached the issue alone.

This is of course at the core of a consultant’s pitch- but is it true? If you have viewed our testimonial videos then these SME business owners say yes.

For me the effect is best demonstrated by Michael Gerber in his classic book the e-myth- why most small businesses fail. Gerber’s premise is that every business needs 3 “people” working in it. The 3 people can be the same person, but this is VERY difficult as that person MUST cover off 3 distinct roles-

  1. The Entrepreneur– to light the match and then continue to bring new inspiration
  2. The Technician– who is skilled at doing the work “in” the business and…
  3. The Manager– who works “on” the business as if it were a product that is continually under development

Small businesses fail because typically the owner has a “flash” of inspiration to start up a business then becomes the technician working “in” the business and spends little time managing and working “on” the business. In fact when times get tough and the business needs working “on” many owners revert to their “safe place” and try to do more work “in” the business to fix it.

This is why 1+1=3 someone to work with you “on” your business will keep that fire burning.
