Be Different – Finding your Unique Selling Proposition

As at 30 April 2018 there were over 600,400 Limited Companies registered in New Zealand (source www.companiesoffice.govt.nz). Chances are that there is another company that offers a similar product and/or service to you.

How do you stand out from the crowd What makes a buyer choose your company over another? What is your unique selling proposition?

Have a look at your current customers, particularly those that you like dealing with and you make money from. What are the reasons they have bought from you:

  • Do you offer a wide range of product/services (one stop shop) or a niche selection
  • Do you have products that are difficult to source from anywhere else
  • Is it easy to buy from you (location, online, instore, payment options)?
  • Do you have great after sales service?
  • Are your products high or low quality?
  • Do you offer the lowest price?

Now have a look at your competitors. Why do their customers buy from them and not from you?

You should now be a long way towards understanding your unique selling proposition. You do not need to satisfy all the criteria for a customer, just the ones that make them want to buy from you.

Now that you know what makes your business unique, be proud of being different. Shout it from the rooftops! Include it in your marketing, your website, your social media, your brochures, you get the idea.
